Arrival in Srinagar

On arrival, you’ll settle into your houseboat, a slice of tradition in Kashmir, and will be able to relax in a shikara ride over floating gardens and colorful market boats. Srinagar to Gulmarg
After breakfast, take a break from the serene lakes and move towards Gulmarg from Srinagar. The road winds up through apple orchards and drowsy hamlets, the air chilling as pines dot the hillside. Gulmarg looks like a dream - vast meadows filled with wildflowers that are embraced by snow peaks. We will ride the Gondola to the upper slopes, where the mountains go on forever, and the world below gets small. You can take a peaceful stroll, go for a pony ride, or just enjoy the scenery with a cup of tea in your hand. Go early in the morning to the meadows, fresh in my memory, to Srinagar by evening.

Srinagar to Pahalgam
Today set out early for Pahalgam, Valley of Shepherds. The ride will take you across saffron fields, apple orchards, and tiny villages, where people live life in harmony with nature. On our route we shall stop at Avantipur Jama, which was the glory of Kashmir formerly. The Lidder River flows through green fields in the midst of pine and snow in Pahalgam. It will be a slow stroll, going to Aru or Betaab Valley, and breathing the freshness of the mountains. When the day fades away into the night, the air is cool and calm - just the right temperature during an excellent leisurely dinner on the river banks in starlight.

Pahalgam to Sonamarg to Kargil
The trip of today is a contrast in discoveries - green lush valleys to the rocky grandeur of Sonamarg. You may wish to visit its golden fields and glacial waters before continuing to Zojila Pass where the landscape would be totally different. We pass over to the highlands of Ladakh, and snowy ridges, untold mountains, and the sharp mountain winds are our companions. In the afternoon, go to Kargil, a small town in the valley of the Suru River. The evening ends with stories of the fire in the silent company of the Himalayan mountains.

Kargil to Leh via Lamayuru and Alchi
As the sun begins to light up the mountains, we will embark on our drive towards Leh. En route, we will visit the ancient stone-carved Buddha at Mulbek and climb the highest point on the Srinagar-Leh circuit, Fotu La. The road leads us to the village of Lamayuru, the "MoonLand" of Ladakh, with its weird formations of the earth in various shades of gold and gray. After departure from the monastery, we will take a visit to Alchi, a thousand-year-old ensemble of temples, adorned in bright colors with murals and impregnated with calm prayer halls.

Exploring Leh
Leh awakens softly under the sun's morning rays. Head first to Shey Palace, then ascend to Thiksey Monastery, whose red and white leveled structure recalls Tibet's Potala Palace. Later, at Hemis, the sound of monks chanting fills the air, bringing centuries of devotion. You have the afternoon free to explore - run through Leh's bazaar, hand-weave some pashminas and prayer wheels, or have coffee from a rooftop. The town is bathed with golden rays as the sun sets at Shanti Stupa, and you will feel a deep connection with this land of peace.

Leh to Nubra Valley via Khardung La
After breakfast, begin by taking one of the most spectacular drives in the world - across Khardung La Pass, which sits high above the clouds. The cold wind cuts, but the panorama is magnificent, constant ranges fade to the horizon. As you descend to the Nubra Valley, the scenery becomes more desert dunes and villages lined with poplars. See Diskit Monastery with a towering Buddha statue looking at the valley, and take a camel ride on the double-humped Bactrian camels of Hunder. Excursion to Turtuk
Today we take a course for the village of Turtuk, which is like a secret told by the mountains. Once a part of Baltistan, its culture is a beautiful amalgam of the Ladakhi and the Balti cultures. We'll pass through apricot gardens, stone homes, and narrow streets that burst into marvelous vistas with the peaks of the Karakoram. Later, making your way back to Nubra, making visits to the banks of the river, watching the light of the evening slowly die down into the night.

Nubra to Pangong Lake
After breakfast, our road is up through the Shyok valley along watery streams shimmering in the sun. When you reach Pangong Lake, the view will be mind-blowing. The water turns turquoise to deep blue as the clouds float in the sky. You can sit on the beach, skip rocks, or simply enjoy the silence. As night falls, the lake mirrors the stars, and the calm feels timeless.

Pangong to Tso Moriri
Start early to reach Tso Moriri, one of Ladakh's most isolated lakes. Return to Leh
Beginning your return to Leh, retracing roads that now seem familiar, yet still beguiling. Along the way you can stop for some photos, and also to take in some tea at mountain cafes, and maybe even stroll a mile or two or so through sleepy hamlets. Arrive to Leh in the afternoon and have a leisurely evening. You can return to local shops for souvenirs or sit down to a nice meal and a chat.The day has a calming feel of completion - the kind that comes only after you have been on a journey you have lived.

Leh to Srinagar
It's time to head back to Srinagar either by air or by winding mountain highways. The lower the plane flies, the more open the valley appears to you - lakes, gardens and poplar-lined boulevards to welcome you home. Introspection and relaxation occupy the rest of the day. Do a final stroll around the lakeside or shop for Kashmiri handicrafts or have dinner at the wazwan dishes.
